The Indian Navy stated on Tuesday that it was still interested in purchasing American Predator drones, but that they need have 60% indigenous content.
“We are still pursuing the ‘Acquire Predator Drones’ proposal,” Vice-Admiral SN Ghormade told India Today. We’re looking into indigenization and what facilities can be built in India. It is a skill that we require.”
One of the deals placed on hold was the American Predator drone sale in order to strengthen the “Make In India” campaign. To examine the entire agreement, which was anticipated to cost roughly USD 6 billion for 30 drones, a committee led by a lieutenant general was constituted.
Initially, India planned to acquire 30 American Predator high-altitude long-endurance drones equipped with strike capability, including missiles, to be split equally among the three military.
India is now operating two predator drones leased from an American company, which are assisting the Navy in keeping watch of actions in the Indian Ocean region.
The MQ-9B predator armed drones — ten each for three services — are viewed as a critical component of India’s national security and defence requirements. The officials did not go into additional detail, but they ruled out any bureaucratic or regulatory obstacles.
