Drones will soon be monitoring the forest, animals, and Olive Ridley sea turtles in Bhitarkanika National Park and Gahirmatha marine reserve.
Recently, the Orissa High Court authorised the state government to employ drones to combat illicit prawn farming in Bhitarkanika. According to Rajnagar Tehsildar Ashwani Bhuyan, the district government has chosen to employ drone cameras in the park in response to a High Court decision.
The drones will also be used to trace poachers, locate illicit prawn farms, and monitor fishing vessels entering the Gahirmatha marine reserve. For the first time, unmanned aerial aircraft equipped with infrared cameras will be used to count the Olive Ridley sea turtle population and follow their movement in the marine reserve.
“We will capture beautiful shots of the turtles on the beach without harming the sea creatures. Drone cameras are lightweight and portable. It would let us maintain a careful eye on the turtles from the skies,” said Bhitarkanika’s in-charge DFO Adhir Behera. The Forest Department will use drone cameras to count the number of turtles breeding on the beach.
The drones will also aid in habitat management, reducing fisherman and turtle-animal confrontations, and monitoring illicit fishing. Counting the exact number of nesting turtles on the beach has long been a difficult task for field employees.
