TAPAS 201 has been designed and developed by the Bengaluru-based Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE) HAL and BEL will be the production partners for the MALE UAV. It is being developed to carry out Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance roles for the three wings of the armed forces.
The TAPAS 201 Medium Altitude Long Endurance (MALE) UAV has reached a critical milestone during an 18-hour flying test at the Aeronautical Test Range in Chitradurga, Karnataka.
TAPAS 201 was planned and built by the Aeronautical Development Establishment in Bengaluru (ADE). The MALE UAV will be manufactured in collaboration with HAL and BEL.
The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) announced the achievement on Twitter: India’s TAPAS UAV, #designed & #developed by Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE), Bengaluru for tri-services, has successfully completed an 18-hour flight test at Aeronautical Test Range, Chitradurga.
TAPAS 201 UAV
TAPAS 201 is a multi-mission unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) being designed to perform Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance duties for the three wings of the armed services, with an endurance range of 24 to 30 hours.
TAPAS 201, dubbed the “Indian Predator,” is capable of carrying a variety of payloads, including Medium Range Electro Optic, Long Range Electro Optic, Synthetic Aperture Radar, Electronic Intelligence, Communication Intelligence, and Situational Awareness Payloads, to perform missions both during the day and at night.
The MALE UAV, formerly known as RUSTOM II, had its first flight in November 2016. It has flown several test flights since then.
India MALE UAV
TAPAS 201 experienced a setback in 2019 when the UAV crashed during an experimental flight at the Aeronautical Test Range in Chitradurga.
In addition to the Indian army, air force, and navy, internal security agencies like as State Police Forces, BSF, CRPF, and the Coast Guard are interested in using the MALE UAV.
The Rustom-II/Tapas BH-201 (Tactical Advanced Platform for Aerial Surveillance Beyond Horizon-201) drone is being developed by Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE), Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO).
India has developed a medium-altitude long-endurance unmanned aerial vehicle, Rustom 2 or TAPAS-BH-201, similar to the American Predator drones. Rustom 2 may conduct continuous surveillance and carry weaponry as well as monitoring devices.
